Day one is done and we packed a lot into these last 30 hours. An overnight train journey from Truro to Montreal. Need to learn to live communally on the train over the next month now that I am old and set in my ways. I hope to let go of some of that over the next month, relax and go with the flow...when I last backpacked across Europe in 1997, there were no cell phones, laptops, Skype conversations held on speakerphone....times have changed!
When we got off the train in Montreal, Bill was saluted by a Via Rail employee, in a nice way, who seemed to admire him his adventurous spirit at his age. I have told Bill that he is inspiring me and he gives me hope that maybe I have another backpaking journey in me after this one - stay tuned!
We easily found our accommodations and, fueled only by adrenaline (cause sleep was not something we got much of on that train) we identified what we wanted to see in the few hours we had in Montreal. So after a lovely lunch, we set off to explore Old Montreal and the harbour area. The architecture in this city is stunning.
After a wee while walking, my tank ran out of gas and we returned to the hotel so I could rest. Bill set off in search of a pub that would hopefully be showing the Barcelona v Bayern Munich match. He tried a few to no avail. He did briefly catch the score (1-0 for BM) when he wandered into some sort of Turkish pub. They were playing the match, but no beer was on offer. They were sitting around sucking on giant bongs! I don't know if I would have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes later that night!
Once he made it back to the hotel, we went out to a nice dinner. It would appear that everyone in Montreal is young, beautiful and skinny. They don't seem to let their old, ugly people out in daylight. So I sucked in my gut and enjoyed my quellsedia.
Back at the hotel, we are fully enjoying all 25 degrees of this heat as the air conditioning in the room does not work at all.
Early rise tomorrow and off to the train station to cross the US border into New York. All in all, an eventful 30 hours so far!

So... looks like a romantic and partner enriching trip for two, has now become a self searching trip for one. Alas, life has decided to send my easy life one hell of a curveball. As I am praying for my own recovery I have the joy of this trip to save me from months of depression.
For me, I am hopeing to come out of this trip with a brighter outlook on my present situation.
If paris can't lull me with her fashionable embrace, maybe brugge, prague, or rome will win me over.
