Glen Gabbard and Aaron T. Beck

At the opening ceremony for the American Psychiatric Association, Dr. Beck sat down for a conversation with Glen Gabbard about the similarities and differences between CT and psychoanalysis.

A couple reactions:
First, I continually hear about cognitive therapists not understanding the internal reality of the patient? I hope my trainees are identifying core beliefs and strategies! This is the internal reality of the patient.
Second, CT is not techniques but a theory driven intervention. The most important part is the strategy, which is based on understanding the "internal life."
Third, everyone is obsessed with the time CT takes (eg, 12 sessions). However, it is widely known that CT is time-sensitive, as in we think of the end of therapy from the beginning. In more complex cases, it will take longer. However, we pay attention to our strategy and the patient's internal reality. This guides the length of treatment.
Finally, I am concerned about people who are constantly shifting their treatment. I always operate from a cognitive theory. My interventions vary based on the conceptualization and strategy.

Very interesting talk!
